Amina Abdul Jillil was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. She moved to Los Angeles at 18 years old to pursue her dancing career. Her life as a dancer has been such a major part of her life that gave her the opportunity to get cool jobs and travel all over the world. She designed the fabulous bow pump.
Her dance career:
Amina did her first job with Britney Spears, which led her to tour three times until 2011. She worked with Janet Jackson which was a dream come true for her. She was also part of the show BELIEVE with le Cirque du Soleil, which was an all around incredible experience for Amina as a dancer/artist. She said:”it was the first time that I was able to go beyond movement and play a character which was very cool! (Dark Villain, Evil type of character with AMAZING costumes)”
Her design career:
She started her fashion career in between jobs and traveling. She enrolled in a fashion program at Santa Monica College where I took courses in Sewing, illustration, color analysis. She started working on her designs and brand in 2008.
“I would get asked quite a bit about things that I’d made, so that kind of gave me the confidence to start my brand. I started with sandals because I just love sandals 🙂 I have more sandals and jackets then anything else in my wardrobe. I made my first samples by hand with the help of my local shoe repair guy. I bought inexpensive sandals … that maybe had 1 or 2 straps on them (like a flip flop) just so that I could use the sole of the shoe. I cut everything off of them, bought some leather and just cut, paste and hand stitched them together. I’m mostly visual and don’t really work from sketches…although I do sketch at times. But mostly I just go with the ideas that I have in my head and try to get them to come to life. ” – Amina Abdul Jillil
